Cumbias rebajadas is the music genre that gives life to the Cholombianos, a subculture found on the outskirts of Monterrey, Mexico, my hometown.
The mixture of Colombia's Cumbia music with north Mexican art styles has produced a slowed down sub genre of music and it’s accompanying fashion. Oversized clothing, catholic mexican motifs, stretched out images and text, giant plaid and Hawaiian print, and airbrushed, graffiti style blackletter text make up the visual identity of these teens, who sport hand woven necklaces emblazoned with their names, neighbourhoods and favourite radio stations.
This fictional festival celebrates this subculture, showcasing the music, fashion, and cultural practices of a small group that left its mark on the country.
Showcasing the fashion front and centre, this identity aims to be subversive, catching people's attention when they pass by it.
It’s colours are inspired by the country the style finds its roots in, while also referencing the different typography styles, such as Blackletter fonts, sticker culture, and stretched type.
“Over the decades, local musicians and DJs have added their own twist to cumbia with their propensity for slower tempos breeding a subgenre known as cumbia norteña,
a deviation that’s comparable to what dub reggae is to normal reggae” —

The custom typeface for this project, REBAJADO DISPLAY is a derivative of OT Neue Montreal, edited and combined with various serifs and swashes from blackletter fonts. The font is inspired by the low-budget album covers prevalent in this genre, and hand-drawn blackletter typography popular on clothing and art.
